Juppen Workshop, Riefensberg
The Bregenzerwald has a traditional and very typical costume in the Austrian Alpine region the so-called 'Juppe'. In the Juppen Workshop in Riefensberg the traditional Bregenzerwald costume is still produced today. At the same time it is a museum and a location for traditional costume production. Also architecturally, the Juppen Workshop, which was set up in the year 2003 in the former Inn Krone, is a peculiarity.
A Bregenzerwald Juppe cannot be purchased in any shop. It is usually an heirloom, which is passed on within the family and nowadays very much coveted and expensive. The individual stages of the finishing of the linen material for the Juppen skirt can only be carried out in the Juppen Workshop.
The association Juppen Workshop Riefensberg offers guided tours to get to know the entire work processes. He supports interested parties on the way to her Juppe and mediates contacts to the individual art artisan.
Damuels, at the intersection between the Bregenzerwald and the Grosses Walsertal, today has only very few of these Juppen. The people, who live in Damuels were originally Walser and in previous years poor peasants, who rarely could afford their own costumes.
